Description

Avalon is a woven divider that could be used as an autonomous, spatial and acoustic elements within an architectural or living environment. The misty landscape tells a story about a tactile memory.

The piece is an experiment with the industrial production on the one hand and materials. The selected materials all have their own rules and regularities and are used in a way that emphasizes their tactility. The Mohair creates a foggy surface and the highly twisted Elirex yarn creates little loops which could be considered a weaving default but is actually a conscious choice.

The designer

Nathalie Van der Massen
Nathalie Van der Massen (°88) is a designer working in the fields of textile, graphic design, architecture and interior design. After finishing her Master degree in Graphic Design at Sint Lucas Antwerp, Nathalie Van der Massen goes to LUCA Gent to specialise in Textile Design. In this period, she is selected for a residency in the Textile Museum in Tilburg and does an internship at GdA, a renowned textile company in Como (It) working for high-fashion houses like Balenciaga, Prada etc. and later at Christian Wijnants. Her interest in architecture and interior design was catalysed when she got in contact with the Flemish Architecture Institute. She was commissioned to research the archive of Belgian interior architects Bataille-ibens and develop textiles to show during ‘Ensembles’, an  exhibition on architecture and craftsmanship. Textiles have a huge potential as autonomous, spatial and acoustic elements within an architectural or living environment. Because of her love for architecture and spatial design Van der Massen is focused primarily on interior textiles. Van der Massen’s work is characterized by a fascination and sensitivity for (natural) materials, surface and technicality. She explores the possibilities of weaving and tries to find a balance between industrial techniques and production on the one hand and craftsmanship.  In 2018, she will open her own studio/showroom in Antwerp and will launch her first collection. As textiles and linen are a great part of Belgian and European heritage, the collection is developed and produced in Belgium (and the Netherlands) to guarantee the best knowhow and quality possible.
