Biography

Born in Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), the largest state in the South of Brazil and home of the Brazilian gauchos, architect Ines Schertel spent most of her adult life in the city of São Paulo, SP. In 201?, she decided to make a radical lifestyle change, leaving her big city life and moving to a farm located in São Francisco de Paula, in the mountains of her native southern state.

In this beautiful landscape Ines and her husband take care of 300 sheep that supply the artist with all the wool she needs to manufacture her rustic felt pieces.

The wool felting technique was learned while Ines traveled in Europe and Central Asia. It is a 6,000 year old art by which a non-woven fabric made by wool is manually pressed using moisture made of water and olive soap until a compact piece is formed by juxtaposing layers that are locked together at the end of the process.

Through her thoughtful approach to design, Ines participates in and follows up every single step of the creative and manufacturing process, from obtaining raw fiber material to the production. This hands-on approach enables her to assess the environmental impact of the entire process.
